Barbados has officially detached from Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and becomes the newest republic in the world.

Dame, Sandra Mason was sworn in as president of the country, Barbados in Bridgetown, the capital, during an overnight ceremony.

The Barbadian singer Rihanna and Charles the Prince Wales attended the event, which corresponded with the country’s 55th anniversary of Independence, and also mark the end of Queen Elizabeth ll as head of state.

In an address given by Prince Charles, he acknowledged the “appalling atrocities of slavery” the Carribean island suffered in the past.

This new stage for Barbados ends Britain’s centuries of power, as well as over 200 years when the island was a hub for the transatlantic slave trade.

A final salute was made to the British Kingship and the Royal flag was taken down and replaced to mark the official change of power.

Prince Charles who spoke as the guest of honour at the event restated the persistent ties between the two nations notwithstanding the change in constitutional status.

The prince described the moment as a new beginning and he was awarded the prestigious order of Freedom of Barbados by the new president.

The Queen sent the country her warmest good wishes for happiness, peace and prosperity in the subsequent years and she also said the nation holds a very special space in her heart.

Rihanna at the ceremony was declared a national hero at the Independence day event by President Mason. Previously, she had been named an ambassador by her home country back in 2018.

The country’s move to Independence was described as a “seminal moment” by the country’s prime minister which will see Barbados leaves fully it’s colonial past behind.
