Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s deposed leader, and former president, Win Myint were each given seven years in prison on Friday for five counts of corruption, according to a report from Myanmar’s Mizzima News portal, which cited the court.

According to the news portal, the sentence was delivered during a court proceeding that was held inside of Naypyidaw Central Prison.

Meanwhile, the accused are entitled to file an appeal.

Allegedly, a helicopter that was bought with state money was leased and used, which is the subject of all five charges.

When granting authority to subordinates to hire, purchase, and maintain the helicopter, Aung San Suu Kyi and Win Myint allegedly violated the law and wasted state money by not adhering to all necessary financial and legal requirements.

The most recent in a string of criminal and administrative complaints brought against Aung San Suu Kyi is this one. Including the sentence from Friday, she will spend 33 years in jail.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, presided as Myanmar’s state counselor from February 2021 until the military overthrew her using a constitutional provision for transferring authority in an emergency.

Aung San Suu Kyi and former President Win Myint were placed under house arrest after the military junta ousted their governments.

She was shortly moved to the Central Prison in Naypyidaw.
