Akyem Tafo Bans Noise-Making Ahead of Ohumkan Festival & Chief’s 40th Anniversary

The chiefs and people of Akyem Tafo have announced a two-week ban on noise-making, set to begin on June 3 and end on June 17, as part of preparations for this year’s Ohumkan Festival and a historic milestone—the 40th anniversary of the reign of Tafohene, Daasebre Adusei Peasah.

The Ohumkan Festival is deeply rooted in tradition and is the first major festival celebrated in the Akyem Abuakwa State. It marks the symbolic green light for the consumption of yam across Okyeman and is a proud display of the region’s cultural identity.

Speaking to the media, Nana Adepa Amponsah Yeboah, the Kyidomhene of Akyem Tafo, emphasized the special significance of this year’s festival, as it coincides with four decades of dedicated leadership by the Tafohene.

He praised Daasebre Adusei Peasah for his far-reaching impact on education, agriculture, sanitation, and social development in the community.

“This year’s festival is not just about tradition; it’s a celebration of leadership, legacy, and progress,” Nana Yeboah stated.

To preserve the sanctity of the event, the noise ban will be strictly enforced. Residents are urged to avoid loud music, drumming, and other disturbances during the period to allow for reflection and spiritual cleansing.

A series of exciting activities will unfold leading up to the main durbar on June 21. These include:

  • An inter-schools quiz
  • Musical performances
  • A cooking competition
  • Football matches
  • Traditional and cultural day celebrations

The festivities are expected to draw participants from all over the Eastern Region and beyond.

With the spotlight on Akyem Tafo, the community looks forward to welcoming guests to experience the richness of Okyeman culture and honor a chief who has led with wisdom and heart for 40 years.
