14-Year-Old Loses Limbs in Devastating Electrical Shock

A 14-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student has begun the challenging road to recovery after losing both upper arms and one leg in a devastating electrical shock accident.

The incident occurred on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, when the young boy, a resident of Hobor, a community in Accra, came into contact with a naked electrical wire while attempting to fix a television cable at home.

Unaware of the severe risks involved, the boy was shocked by a powerful electrical current that passed through his body, causing him to lose consciousness.

He was quickly rushed to the Kwameanu Ashalajah Hospital, where he regained consciousness but had sustained critical injuries.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to Amasaman Hospital and then referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where medical experts made the decision to amputate his limbs to prevent further complications.

Since January 1, the young victim has been undergoing treatment at the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre (NRPSBC) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Despite the traumatic nature of his injuries, he is currently in stable condition and preparing for the final stage of surgery in May.

This surgery will involve skin grafting to cover the amputated areas and fitting him with artificial limbs to help him walk and regain mobility.

As part of his recovery process, a team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists, and even a teacher, is working with him to help him adjust to his new life.

They are providing the necessary emotional, physical, and educational support to help him cope with his remaining leg and move forward.

In response to the family’s plight, the Indian philanthropic group Maa Sherawaali has donated GH¢25,000 to support the boy’s medical bills.

The group has also pledged further assistance as he continues his recovery journey.

A family representative expressed profound gratitude for the donation, calling it a great relief amidst the emotional and financial challenges they face.

This tragic accident has highlighted the dangers of electricity, especially when handling exposed wires.

A representative from Maa Sherawaali emphasized the importance of electrical work being carried out by qualified professionals and urged parents to educate their children about the risks of electrical hazards.
