President Mahama Swears in COP Christian Yohuno as the New Inspector-General of Police

M N RidwanIn a significant moment for the Ghana Police Service, President John Mahama swore in Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Friday, March 14, 2025, at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House.
The appointment marks a pivotal leadership transition as Yohuno takes over from Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by top government officials, security personnel, and distinguished guests, underscoring the importance of this leadership change.
COP Yohuno’s promotion comes after a distinguished career in law enforcement, during which he has garnered extensive experience in various senior roles within the police force.
With over 40 years of experience in the Ghana Police Service, Yohuno is no stranger to the challenges of maintaining public safety and tackling crime.
He previously served as the Deputy IGP in charge of Operations, a role in which he played a critical part in shaping the country’s security landscape.
His career also includes high-ranking positions such as the Accra Central Divisional Commander and Regional Commander, which have provided him with a deep understanding of both urban and regional security dynamics.
COP Yohuno’s rise through the ranks has been marked by significant achievements. In 2011, he was honoured with the prestigious Grand Medal for his outstanding contributions in combating armed robbery and other crimes.
His leadership qualities were further recognized when he was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) in 2012, followed by his elevation to COP in 2016.
As he steps into the role of IGP, Yohuno brings with him a strong commitment to law enforcement excellence and a dedication to professional development.
His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree from the University of Ghana and an Executive MBA in Project Management from the Institute of Professional Studies (now UPSA).
COP Yohuno’s leadership will focus on strengthening the Ghana Police Service, enhancing its operational efficiency, and improving public confidence in the force.
His vision includes tackling crime, enforcing discipline, and pushing forward reforms to make the police service more effective and accountable.
