M N RidwanSouth African billionaire Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected as the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for another four-year term.
Motsepe, Africa’s ninth richest individual, was unopposed in his bid to continue leading the continent’s football governing body.
His re-election was confirmed at the 14th extraordinary general assembly of CAF, which took place in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Motsepe first assumed the presidency of CAF in 2021, making history as the first English-speaking president of the organization.
He succeeded Ahmad Ahmad, who was suspended by FIFA in November 2020 over financial misappropriation.
Under Motsepe’s leadership, CAF has seen several positive changes and developments aimed at enhancing African football.
One of his major achievements includes the significant increase in the prize money for the prestigious African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which rose by over 40%, bringing the prize total to $7 million.
Additionally, the prize money for the CAF Champions League, both for men and women, also saw increases during his time in office.
Another key milestone in Motsepe’s tenure is the establishment of the African Super League (ASL), a competition that was initially expected to feature 24 teams and operate with a budget of $100 million.
While the tournament’s format was scaled back to include only eight teams, the inaugural edition in 2023 was won by Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
Motsepe’s re-election ensures the continuity of his leadership and vision for African football. His focus on improving financial rewards for competitions and driving new initiatives like the African Super League reflects his commitment to elevating the level of football across the continent.
With another four years at the helm, Motsepe will likely continue to implement reforms aimed at further professionalizing African football and increasing its global influence.
As the sport continues to grow in popularity and success across Africa, Motsepe’s leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of the beautiful game on the continent.
