South Korea’s music industry is mourning the sudden and tragic death of R&B icon Wheesung, who was found dead in his Seoul apartment on March 10, 2025.

The 43-year-old, born Choi Whee-sung, was a pioneering figure in the country’s music scene and had a career spanning over two decades. His untimely passing has left fans and fellow artists devastated.

Emergency responders arrived at his residence in the Gwangjin District after his mother expressed concern when Wheesung failed to show up for a scheduled meeting with his manager.

Authorities have ruled out foul play but have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Wheesung’s legacy in South Korean music is indelible. He began his career in 1999 as a member of the group A4, but it was his solo career that brought him widespread recognition.

His 2002 debut album Like a Movie introduced his soulful vocals and emotionally charged lyrics, earning him a place among Korea’s most influential R&B artists.

His hits, including With Me, Insomnia, and Even Though of Marriage, solidified his reputation as a master of ballads, with a unique ability to connect with listeners through his music.

In addition to his own work, Wheesung was a respected songwriter and producer, contributing tracks to artists like Ailee, TWICE, Younha, and T-ara. His music’s raw emotion and storytelling made him a beloved figure in the industry.

Despite his musical success, Wheesung’s later years were overshadowed by personal struggles. He faced legal issues related to his misuse of propofol, which led to a suspended sentence for habitual abuse in 2021.

The controversy and his ongoing mental health challenges marked a difficult period for the artist, yet he made attempts to rebuild his career.

The news of his death has sparked a flood of tributes from fans and fellow musicians alike. Rapper Changmo credited Wheesung for influencing his own music, while R&B singer Yoon Min-soo remembered his kind-hearted nature.

Wheesung’s upcoming concert in Daegu, where he was set to perform with KCM, has been canceled, a painful reminder of the void left by his passing.

As the music world reflects on his contributions, Wheesung’s death serves as a stark reminder of the pressures faced by those in the spotlight and the mental toll of fame.
