FIRE EXTINGUISHERS VITAL FOR FIRE PREVENTION

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has made it clear that, most Ghanaian houses do not have fire extinguishers, in spite of it being a legal requirement.

As stated by the service, people continue using the Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), and other electrical gadgets.

there will be possible situations of fire outbreaks in every home when safety procedures are not considered.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Grade One (AFCO1), Frederick Ohemeng, Western Regional Commander of the GNFS, has asked Ghanaian homes to get fire extinguishers to save lives and properties. He had to said this so Ghanaians could respond rapidly when fire occurs.

Mr. Ohemeng noted, emphasizing that measures must be taken to prevent these fire outbreaks in homes because the outcome is terrible when fire occurs in homes.

He had mentioned about 60 percent of fire cases being domestic and emphasizing that most people making use of electricity and other electrical gadgets in the home should be more responsible and careful.

He had also said illegal connections and poor electrical works have resulted in most domestic fire outbreaks.

Mr. Ohemeng also advised Ghanaians to keep away the services of quack electricians but go in for the services of certified electricians to do their electrical services.

He also said various safety education campaign programmes has been rolled-out by the Regional command to bring the minds of the general public on the need to be responsible when using fire.

“The harmattan season is here and the atmosphere is very dry. During this period we should avoid burning the bushes around our houses, rather, we should weed because small fires can extend to the whole house”, he cautioned.

He guaranteed Ghanaians that the fire service personnel are going to sacrifice their merry-making and attend to any fire outbreaks during the Xmas, and also asked parents to keep matches and other fire hazards, away from the reach of children.
