“free wontumi now!” – tensions flare as npp rallies at nib

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) swarmed the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra on Thursday, May 30, following reports that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, had been transferred there.

Wontumi, a controversial and influential figure within the NPP, was arrested four days ago by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He is under investigation for alleged fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes.

Although he was granted bail to the tune of GH¢50 million with two sureties—both of which must be justified—his legal team has only been able to secure one surety so far, leaving him in continued detention.

News of his transfer to the NIB headquarters sparked agitation among his loyal supporters, many of whom were visibly frustrated by what they perceive as political victimization.

Two Sprinter buses transported dozens of party faithful from the EOCO offices to the NIB premises in a coordinated show of support.

Chanting slogans and demanding Wontumi’s immediate release, the crowd was met with heightened security.

Gates remained firmly shut, and law enforcement officials restricted access to the compound.

JoyNews correspondent James Avedzi, who was on the ground, confirmed the arrival of several high-ranking NPP officials and Members of Parliament, who attempted to negotiate access to the facility. Their efforts appeared unsuccessful as security maintained a firm stance.

This latest development has added to growing tensions within the political space, with some party insiders expressing concern about the implications for party unity and public perception.

Wontumi’s arrest and extended detention have stirred sharp reactions on social media, where opinions remain divided.

While some view the move as a long-overdue investigation into alleged corruption, others see it as a politically motivated attack on one of the NPP’s most vocal and visible leaders.

Meanwhile, the NIB and EOCO have yet to release an official statement regarding the reasons for the transfer or updates on the ongoing investigation.

As the situation unfolds, political observers are watching closely, especially with elections on the horizon and party dynamics already under strain.
