New SIM Registration to Be Smoother and More Efficient, Sam George Assures

Ghanaians can expect a smoother and more user-friendly experience in the upcoming phase of the country’s SIM card registration, according to the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on April 9, 2025, George assured the public that the new process would prioritize efficiency and be driven by technology to make it as stress-free as possible.

“This is a human-centered, technology-driven exercise,” George explained. “It will happen so seamlessly and without stress that most Ghanaians will ask themselves why they were saddled with eight years of misrule and mismanagement.”

This statement comes in the wake of frustrations experienced during the previous SIM re-registration campaign launched in 2021 under the Akufo-Addo administration.

The 2021 initiative required all SIM card holders to re-register using the Ghana Card, the national identity document.

However, the exercise faced numerous obstacles, including technical issues, limited access to Ghana Cards, and low public participation. These challenges led to multiple extensions of the deadline, and even with the extensions, millions of SIM cards remained unregistered.

These persistent issues raised concerns about data privacy, the reliability of the mobile app used for self-registration, and the risk of fraud.

Sam George’s comments seem aimed at reassuring the public and rebuilding trust in the process. He highlighted that the new approach would embrace both innovation and better support systems to make the process as accessible and efficient as possible for all Ghanaians.

With a more streamlined digital system and a human-centered approach, the government hopes to avoid the previous setbacks and ensure a successful and inclusive SIM registration process in the future.
