A fire breakout that destroyed the top floor of a two-story dormitory at the Wa Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Upper West Region on Sunday night forced the displacement of at least 200 female students.
The fire, which started at 8 o’clock, destroyed supplies, stationery, and personal items worth hundreds of Ghana Cedis.
After viewing the blazing flames, eight kids passed out from fear and had to be taken to the Wa Municipal Hospital.
Imran Iddrisu, Assistant Divisional Fire Officer (DOIII), led the squad of fire fighters in putting out the fire on behalf of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
According to DOIII Iddrisu, an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, which destroyed five rooms on the top floor of the structure.
While this was happening, Mr. Abdul Razak Korah, the regional director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), visited the school with other staff members to assess the extent of the damage.
He said that in order to mobilize resources for impacted pupils, the GES would collaborate with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).
Accommodations won’t be an issue right now because everyone can fit in the rooms that are available and the school has enough beds for everyone who lost theirs in the fire, according to Mr. Korah.
Only those kids who were “affected” will be permitted to go home upon request in order to recover from the shock, he said.
Moreover, according to Mr. Korah, “the GES would seek support from NADMO to equip them with personal belongings to continue with their academic work” for those who desired to remain.
