M N RidwanPhilemon Gyapong, the Assistant National Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has recently addressed concerns about recruitment in the health sector, particularly the hiring process for nurses and midwives.
During an interview on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, February 24, Gyapong clarified that financial clearance has become a crucial part of the recruitment process for healthcare professionals in Ghana.
Gyapong explained that without financial clearance, nurses and midwives cannot be employed, as it signifies they have not been accounted for in the government’s budget.
In the past, health workers faced lengthy delays—sometimes up to a year—before they were added to the payroll.
However, this process has evolved, with newly employed nurses now receiving financial clearance, meaning they are officially budgeted for.
Gyapong also addressed recent rumors, confirming that the government has granted financial clearance for 15,200 healthcare professionals.
He made it clear that no external recruitment efforts are underway, and that the focus remains on these 15,200 cleared workers.
Responding to a potential strike, Gyapong emphasized that GRNMA’s earlier comments were meant to guide the government and ensure that the recruitment process is handled fairly and efficiently, not as a threat.
He expressed concerns for nurses and midwives who have waited for several years to be employed.
If the bureaucratic processes delay their clearance, these workers, some of whom have been waiting for four to five years post-training, could be unfairly laid off.
However, Gyapong reassured the workers, stating that the Ministry of Health has committed to following proper procedures and ensuring that those who have received financial clearance will not lose their jobs.
