M N RidwanThe World Bank has announced a significant $117 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to expand the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) to all public primary and kindergarten schools across the country.
The expansion aims to enhance foundational learning and equip students with the essential skills needed for their educational development.
The announcement was made during a site visit to St. Thomas Presbyterian Primary School and Kindergarten in Osu, Accra, where World Bank Country Director, Dr. Robert Taliercio, was accompanied by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu.
Dr. Taliercio praised the success of the GALOP initiative, noting that the project had already made significant strides in improving the quality of education in Ghana, particularly in low-performing schools.
Initially targeting 10,000 schools, the project has now seen such success that it is being expanded to reach all public schools nationwide.
With this new funding, the total investment in GALOP has risen to $335.83 million, with the World Bank having previously allocated $218.7 million. The project is expected to conclude in 2026.
Dr. Taliercio emphasized the vital role of quality education in shaping Ghana’s socio-economic future, stating, “Education is the key to addressing poverty and building the capacity of the youth for the world of work and national development.”
He also encouraged students to take their studies seriously to secure brighter futures.
Minister Haruna Iddrisu expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s continued support and acknowledged the importance of early literacy and numeracy.
As part of GALOP’s efforts, a national standardized test will be introduced this year for pupils from Class One through to Junior High School 2, a move expected to further enhance the country’s educational outcomes.
