Tems Wins Best African Music Performance at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards

Nigerian superstar Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has clinched the prestigious Best African Music Performance award for her hit track Love Me JeJe at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

The ceremony took place on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

This marks Tems’ second Grammy win, having previously won the Best Melodic Rap Performance award in 2023 for her collaboration on Future’s Wait For You, featuring Drake.

Her remarkable achievement comes just a year after the Best African Music Performance category was introduced, with South African singer Tyla winning the honor in 2024 for her song Water.

Upon receiving the award, Tems expressed heartfelt gratitude, dedicating her win to her mother, whose birthday coincided with the ceremony.

“Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team.

Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you, mum, because she’s really done a lot for me and my brother,” she said, teary-eyed.

She also extended her thanks to her team and credited God for changing her life in profound ways.

Tems faced stiff competition in the Best African Music Performance category, with nominees including Yemi Alade’s Tomorrow, Asake & Wizkid’s MMS, Chris Brown Featuring Davido & Lojay’s Sensational, and Burna Boy’s Higher.

This category celebrates the rich diversity of African music, incorporating various genres such as Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Amapiano, and more.

The 2025 Grammys also highlighted efforts to support communities affected by the recent wildfires in the Greater Los Angeles Area, raising funds through the MusiCares Fire Relief campaign.
