Speaker of Parliament Urges New MPs to Focus on Reasoning, Not Emotions

The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Bagbin, has called on newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to focus on sound reasoning rather than emotions as they begin their journey in the legislative body.

In a speech delivered at the opening of a four-day induction and orientation programme on January 12, 2025, Bagbin urged the MPs to remain committed to addressing the nation’s challenges with clear, logical thinking.

Bagbin, recognizing the significant responsibility placed on the new MPs, emphasized that the success of their respective political parties would largely depend on their actions in Parliament.

“The task ahead will not be easy, but I am confident in your ability to rise to the occasion,” he stated, addressing the fresh faces in the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The orientation programme aims to equip new MPs with the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out their duties effectively.

It will cover essential topics, including the process of legislation, oversight functions, and the importance of representing constituents.

The programme is designed to give MPs a solid understanding of Parliament’s structure and operations, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to the country’s legislative process.

During the induction, the new MPs will learn about the Parliamentary Service, which provides administrative support, research, and essential resources to MPs.

They will also be introduced to the role of the Clerk to Parliament, who advises MPs on matters related to parliamentary procedure and practice.

Mr. Bagbin encouraged the MPs to network with their colleagues and learn from the experiences of seasoned parliamentarians.

He also urged them to uphold integrity and serve as role models for their constituencies, emphasizing that their titles come with a duty to live uprightly.

The orientation is part of a two-phase programme, and Bagbin reassured the new MPs of his unwavering support.

He expressed his optimism about working together to transform Ghana over the next four years.
