NDC Kicks Off Vetting Process for 165 MMDCE Aspirants in Upper West Region

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially commenced the vetting process for the 165 candidates vying for Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) positions across the Upper West Region.

The vetting, which began on Monday, January 20, 2025, is slated to conclude on Friday, January 24, 2025.

The candidates are seeking to be appointed to lead the eleven Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the region. However, some aspirants have already withdrawn from the contest.

Albert Kansuglo Kachu and Yakubu Naaba Saani, both from the Sissala East Municipality, as well as Issa Kantagyere from the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District, who also serves as the Upper West Regional Communications Officer for the NDC, announced their decisions to step down from the race.

The vetting process is being overseen by a committee composed of key party figures, including Professor Benjamin Kumbuor, a former government appointee; Mr. Cletus Seidu Dapilah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Jirapa Constituency; Mr. Abdul-Nasir Saani, the Regional Chairman; and Mr. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, the Regional Secretary.

The team also includes regional organizers and members of the NDC’s Council of Elders, who are all part of the important process to assess the candidates’ qualifications.

The exercise is considered a crucial step in ensuring that competent individuals are placed at the helm of local governance in the region.

According to the NDC’s regional leadership, the five-day vetting process will play a significant role in selecting the right candidates to lead the MDAs, in line with the party’s broader commitment to effective governance and development.

During the vetting, some aspirants shared their vision for the future of their municipalities.

One such aspirant, Madam Helen Tanlugu, who is seeking the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Sissala East Municipality, expressed her commitment to the development of the area.

“The Sissala East Municipality has a lot of untapped internal revenue potential that can be utilized for development,” she explained.

She emphasized the importance of inclusive decision-making and accountability, which she believes will encourage taxpayer contributions and accelerate growth within the municipality.

Madam Tanlugu also highlighted her dedication to ensuring that the development process is transparent and beneficial to all stakeholders, ensuring sustainable progress for the region.

The ongoing vetting process is seen as an important milestone for the NDC in preparing for a successful term in office, with hopes for improved local governance and community development across the Upper West Region.
