AC Milan secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Serie A rivals Napoli in a thrilling and eventful match.

This is the first time that Milan has reached the last four since winning the competition in 2007.

Despite Napoli dominating early on, Milan was awarded a penalty with one of their first attacks, but Olivier Giroud’s spot-kick was saved by Alex Meret.

However, the veteran Frenchman managed to score the opening goal when he tapped in after Rafael Leao’s sensational 70-yard run set him up. This made it 2-0 on aggregate.

Although Napoli had a host of chances, they were unable to convert them into goals. Fikayo Tomori’s handball in the box gifted Napoli a penalty, but Mike Maignan saved Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s effort.

Napoli finally managed to score a goal through a Victor Osimhen header in injury time, but it was too late to mount a comeback.

The result means that Milan could potentially face their city rivals Inter Milan in the semi-finals. Inter Milan holds a 2-0 lead over Benfica going into Wednesday’s second leg.

Napoli, who are 14 points clear at the top of the Serie A table, have been struggling to find form at a critical time. They had 39 attempts across both legs but were unable to convert them into enough goals to progress to the next round.

Milan’s victory was an impressive feat, considering they have struggled in recent years, failing to qualify for the Champions League since the 2013-14 season.

However, under the guidance of manager Stefano Pioli, they have been able to rebuild and re-establish themselves as one of Italy’s top teams.

Milan’s fans will undoubtedly be delighted with the team’s progress and will be eagerly anticipating their next match, with the possibility of facing their rivals Inter Milan in the semi-finals.

For Napoli, it will be a disappointing end to what has been a successful season so far, with their focus now turning to secure the Serie A title.
