Mahama Pledges Full Support to Police After Swearing in New IGP

M N RidwanPresident John Dramani Mahama has pledged his full support to the Ghana Police Service after swearing in COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on March 14, 2025.
In a powerful speech, the President highlighted the importance of strengthening the relationship between the police and the communities they serve, emphasizing the need for mutual trust and cooperation.
At the swearing-in ceremony, Mahama expressed the belief that building a strong bond between law enforcement officers and citizens is crucial for maintaining peace and security across the country.
“One critical area that requires immediate attention is the relationship between the police service and the communities it serves,” he said.
The President stressed that his administration remains committed to a people-centred approach to policing, one that prioritizes safety while respecting the rights and dignity of every citizen.
Mahama also took the opportunity to address the police officers directly, urging them to fully support their new IGP, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
“To the brave men and women of the Ghana Police Service, I urge you to give your fullest cooperation to your new leader,” he stated, acknowledging the hard work and sacrifices made by the police force.
“Your dedication and sacrifices keep our country safe.”
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the police service, the President assured officers that they have not only the backing of the government but also the trust of the people of Ghana.
“Know that you have the full support of myself and my administration and the people of Ghana… We trust in your ability to build a police service that upholds respect and human dignity across the length and breadth of our country,” Mahama added.
COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who takes over the reins of the Ghana Police Service, is tasked with leading the police force into a new era, focused on enhancing professionalism, efficiency, and public trust.
The President’s strong words of encouragement are expected to inspire confidence within the service and strengthen the relationship between the police and the communities they protect.
