As media personality Afua Asantewaa continues her quest to break the Guinness World Record for the ‘Longest Singing Marathon by an Individual,’ some social media users have voiced their disappointment over what they perceive as a lack of support for the event.
Asantewaa, who is aiming to surpass the current record of 105 hours held by Sunil Waghmare of India, is attempting the feat at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium Heroes Park Annex.
This marks Asantewaa’s second attempt at the record, after her first effort in 2023 was disqualified due to violations concerning rest time.
However, unlike her first attempt in Accra, where large crowds gathered to cheer her on, the atmosphere in Kumasi has been noticeably quieter.
Videos from the live stream show only a handful of individuals present to witness her performance, and social media users have been quick to comment on the stark contrast in support.
One user humorously commented, “Afua Asantewaa sings to her husband and a few birds at Kumasi Heroes Park,” while another wrote, “Afua Asantewaa’s mom doing solo support.
The sing-a-thon is still ongoing.” Some critics also compared the turnout in Kumasi to the enthusiastic crowd in Accra, with one user lamenting, “You Kumasi massives, be yawa people. Did y’all not see the support we gave her in Accra last year?”
Another user expressed frustration, stating, “Afua Asantewaa got some small fame last year with the sing-a-thon and decided to disrespect Ghanaians. Now it’s just her singing to her husband at Heroes Park in Kumasi; nobody is there.”
Despite these criticisms, Asantewaa remains determined in her bid to break the record. Many still hope for a surge of support as she inches closer to achieving her goal, with some fans hoping that her perseverance will inspire greater involvement in the days to come.
