M N RidwanKennedy Agyapong, the outspoken former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Thank You” tour, citing safety concerns for his supporters.
The unexpected decision comes in the wake of a violent clash at a recent tour stop in Bantama, Kumasi, where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed.
The victim, who was part of a Jama group affiliated with Unity Hall (Conti), was reportedly attacked by a security member linked to Ali Suraj, a known NPP figure.
Speaking in a video statement released on Tuesday, Agyapong expressed deep concern for the safety of young people who support him.
“If they treat students like this, then what will happen to my boys?” he asked. “I have decided to withdraw from the Thank You tour to afford Dr. Bawumia the opportunity to tour alone as the former flagbearer of the party.”
While stepping back from the current tour, Agyapong made it clear that he is not stepping out of the political ring.
In fact, he used the moment to officially announce his intention to run for the NPP’s flagbearer position once again.
“I am using this opportunity to announce that I will be contesting because we have built the party for a very long time,” he declared confidently.
Agyapong’s withdrawal highlights growing tension within the NPP, especially in the Ashanti Region, and casts a shadow over the unity tour meant to celebrate the party’s efforts in recent elections.
His announcement also sets the stage for what could be a heated flagbearer race, with party loyalists now watching closely to see how Dr. Bawumia and other contenders respond.
Political observers say the decision could signal a deepening divide within the party as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
