M N RidwanFormer President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that his acceptance of the December 7, 2024, general election results will hinge entirely on the fairness and transparency of the process.
In a recent BBC interview, Mahama expressed concerns about potential irregularities and violence that could threaten the integrity of the upcoming elections.
Mahama made it clear that he would not accept the results if the electoral process was marred by malpractice.
He pointed to issues such as ballot snatching, voter intimidation, military interference, and the involvement of thugs in electoral activities as major threats to the election’s credibility.
“If on election day, there is widespread ballot snatching, beating of people, military intimidation, and thugs causing chaos, you expect me to accept that result?” Mahama asked rhetorically, underlining his stance that the results must be the product of a free and fair election.
His comments come amid rising concerns about the atmosphere surrounding Ghana’s elections, with the former president calling for a transparent process free of violence or any form of electoral misconduct.
Mahama emphasized the importance of the Electoral Commission’s role in ensuring a fair and credible election, noting that the integrity of the process is vital for upholding Ghana’s democracy and maintaining public trust in the outcome.
As the election approaches, Mahama’s remarks underscore the high stakes involved, with both his party and the general public closely watching how the process unfolds.
His call for transparency highlights the need for electoral reforms and vigilance to ensure the legitimacy of Ghana’s democratic processes.
